eBay provides one thing on which we all can agree
Traffic…
It is what you do with that traffic that counts.
What do you do with the traffic eBay sends your way? What could be done with that traffic to improve any business?
What advanced methods available are you using to direct eBay traffic to your own purpose? Would any business owner in your community be interested in learning about these methods?
I have read many of the recent threads in the eBay discussion groups and it occurs to me a lot of honest hard working people in the eBay consignment business are looking for a better and more profitable method beyond simple eBay sales to provide a return on the honest sweat equity investment in an increasingly more difficult business model.
Many of the proposed plans and options offered in the forums and on other web pages are less than an ideal solution for eBay drop store owners. The gamut runs from drop ship opportunities or wholesale importing and warehousing of second run or no name merchandise… to investment “opportunities” in returned and seconds electronics merchandise which in the end may cost you time and exposure to the high risks of returns.
Suggestions of “patent pending” co-op arrangements or systems between drop store owners have been suggested. Some posters in the discussion groups claim software is the key to increased sales. Photo editing tricks have even been suggested as a route to success. All the photoshop tricks and shortcuts in the world do not make a business plan (Unless you happen to own Adobe).
Networks of consignment stores, selling unions, and co-ops all sound like workable solutions, (until you dig into the nuts and bolts and try to understand what it will do for you). Every consignment store operator has developed their own system of processing product, taking photographs, writing descriptions, and shipping sold items. It will be difficult to find other members of your network or co-op who will do things just as you think it should be done… and visa versa… So how will a co-op really work? Advertising share plan?
In the end, you became an independent business owner because you do not want anyone telling you how to run your business. Not a franchise, not eBay and not the drop store owner down the street.
The question is still out there, what can we all do to take all of this eBay knowledge we have each earned in years behind the consignment counter and put it to use for our own advantage?
How can we make all of our experience and knowledge pay for our own future, instead of eBay’s?
What if a business plan was available which offers the eBay consignment specialist an opportunity to step back from consignment operations… Using eBay as a tool rather than a task master, using eBay as a starting point rather than as the entire package. Offering the vast advantages of Internet marketing to other business owners in your community who do not have the background, knowledge, skills or access to internet based selling solutions you control and can offer…
